Test Equipment
Understanding RF Test Equipment
You cannot design what you cannot measure. RF test equipment is the foundation of every successful design cycle: characterize components, verify simulations, debug problems, and certify compliance. The quality of your measurements directly limits the quality of your designs.
The VNA is the single most important instrument. It measures everything about a linear network: gain, loss, match, impedance, group delay, and stability. Learning to use a VNA properly, including calibration, is the most valuable practical skill an RF engineer can develop.
Measurement Capabilities
DR = Psource − DANL (dB)
Typical: +10 dBm − (−130 dBm) = 140 dB
SA sensitivity:
DANL = kTB + NF (dBm)
kTB @1Hz = −174 dBm/Hz
NF = 15-25 dB: DANL = −149 to −159 dBm/Hz
Power meter accuracy:
Thermal: ±0.5% (±0.02 dB)
Diode: ±2-5% (±0.1-0.2 dB)

Frequently Asked Questions
Essentials?
VNA: S-params, impedance, Smith chart. SA: spectral power, spurious, EMI. Sig gen: CW/vector stimulus for RX. Power meter: calibrated TX power. Scope: time domain, eye diagram, TDR. VNA = #1 most important (measures everything linear). Every RF lab needs at minimum VNA + SA + sig gen.
VNA calibration?
SOLT: short + open + load + thru. 12-term error model. Most common. TRL: thru + reflect + line. More accurate at μW (line = better standard). eCal: electronic switching, single connection, fast + repeatable. After cal: real-time error correction. Accuracy limited by: noise floor, connector repeatability, cable stability.
Cost?
NanoVNA: $50-500 (hobby, 6G, 60-80dB DR). Mid VNA: $15-50k (18G, 120dB). High VNA: $150-500k (67G, 140dB). SA: $1k-600k. Sig gen: $3k-200k. Full lab: $200k-1M. Defense/semiconductor labs: multi-million. Used/refurbished market: 50-70% savings on Keysight/R&S.
