TM Mode
Understanding TM Mode
TM modes are characterized by TMmn indices where m and n indicate the number of half-wave variations in the transverse electric field along the broad and narrow waveguide dimensions. The TM11 mode is the lowest-order TM mode in rectangular waveguide.
TM modes have higher cutoff frequencies than the dominant TE10 mode in rectangular waveguide. In circular waveguide, the TM01 mode has a symmetric electric field pattern useful for rotation-insensitive applications.
Frequently Asked Questions
What distinguishes TM from TE modes?
In TM modes, the magnetic field is purely transverse (Hz=0) while the electric field has a longitudinal component. In TE modes, the electric field is purely transverse (Ez=0).
When are TM modes used intentionally?
TM modes are used in circular waveguide rotary joints and some cavity resonator designs where their field symmetry properties are advantageous.
